The Most Common Myths About

Back pain

You've Been Told By Doctors, Friends and Social Media That Keep You In Pain And Taking Pills

If you’ve suffered with back pain or sciatica, you’ve probably heard a wild range of stories and opinions from friends and family, and even outdated advice from doctors to rest and rely on painkillers which has left you confused, frustrated and unable to get long-term relief.

Here are some of the most common back pain myths people who visit our clinic, in Riverside, have been told which has actually made their back pain and sciatica much worse, and delayed their recovery from injuries.

MYTH #1 - THERE'S NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE
This is categorically false. Most of the time, when people have pain for so long, it’s because they haven’t yet fond the correct solution that will fix it. Oftentimes, they’ll do the same thing over and over, and its contributing to the pain, prolonging it and embedding the injury. Just because you’ve suffered for a long time, with pain lingering for months or even years, it doesn’t mean that it will never go away. The body is extremely resilient, you just need to find the actual cause and the proper solution for it to be able to heal effectively.
MYTH #2 - YOU ARE YOUR IMAGE
If you have an image done, most people will assume that if the image says A, that’s the reason you have pain B, which consolidates the individual's false belief that nothing can be done.  Mike has had cases with patients who have severe stenosis, instability or a disc derangement that is causing sciatica, and they’ve been dealing with the pain for a long time. The image told them that A was the problem, and why they had pain, but Mike has been able to fix it. It comes down to the fact that it is only a still image. There might be something there, but that doesn't necessarily translate directly into the pain that you're experiencing and the loss of function that's limiting you from being able to do the things that you love.   Here's an example to put this idea into perspective. A study from years ago took 100 patients who had no pain at all and each one had an MRI. Out of the 100 MRIs, 50% of them had a positive image finding in the MRI where there was a disc problem, stenosis, or a certain grade of instability.
MYTH #3 - THE PAIN COMES WITH AGE
While it is true that we get older every day, and our bodies do change as we age, it does not mean that you will necessarily get back pain. For example, someone in their 40s who has pain in their right lumbosacral area might believe that they are experiencing this discomfort because of their age. This belief would mean that everybody who is in their 40s of the same stature will have the exact same pain, which is not the case. Usually, as we age, we develop these types of pains and conditions because of things that we've been doing wrong for a long time, or perhaps things that we've been doing the same as we used to do when we were younger.
